The treatment process ends with the discharge of treated wastewater through a pipeline, known as the "outfall pipeline." The outfall runs about one mile out to sea and rests about 95 feet beneath the surface. About five million gallons of treated wastewater are safely discharge through the outfall pipeline into the ocean each day.

The outfall is inspected and videotaped annually by divers to assure it is functioning safely. Treated wastewater is discharged through openings known as diffusers that are located in the final 250 feet of the outfall. The discharged, treated wastewater is mixed with seawater in a ratio of about 120 parts of seawater to each part of treated wastewater.
