Construction is nearing completion on the new digester and Combined Heat and Power generator. The two additions work together to make the treatment plant more efficient and self-sufficient. 

 

How it works

Digesters break down the solids removed during wastewater treatment. As part of this process, digesters produce biogas, which is primarily methane. Rather than letting this resource go to waste, the generator will convert the biogas into electricity and heat to help power plant operations. Utilizing this renewable energy source reduces the District's reliance on purchased electricity and natural gas and makes beneficial use of a wastewater treatment byproduct. 

 

What's next

The new digester and generator are now undergoing final commissioning and testing. They are expected to go online by the  end of 2026. Once the equipment is fully operational, this will mark the completion of Phase 1 of the District's Biosolids and Energy Strategic Plan (BESP), a long-term plan to modernize how the District manages biosolids and energy.
