Testing Wastewater for Community Health

The Goleta Sanitary District is part of a statewide initiative aimed at testing wastewater for the presence of viruses, including those responsible for respiratory illnesses, such as influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID). This collaborative effort, organized as the California Surveillance of Wastewaters (Cal-SuWers) Network under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), underscores our commitment to safeguarding the health of our community and enhancing our response to potential public health threats. The statewide testing program monitors viral levels in wastewater as a proactive measure to identify outbreaks before they escalate. By analyzing samples collected from wastewater treatment facilities across the state, health officials can gain valuable insights into the prevalence of viruses in the community, allowing for timely interventions and resource allocation.

The Cal-SuWers Wastewater Dashboard displays an overview of wastewater surveillance data for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19), influenza, and RSV in California.
The Cal-SuWers Network collects and analyzes wastewater samples. Partners in the CDPH Cal-SuWers program include the CDPH Drinking Water and Radiation Laboratory (DWRL); the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS); WastewaterSCAN; wastewater utilities, including GSD; academic researchers, local county health department laboratories; private laboratories; and other partners across the state.
